Formerly known as Stalingrad, the town is famous for being the largest battleground in history and the turning point of the Second World War.
Our visit of the town includes a stop at the mill where Sergeant Pavlov and his companions resisted.
We have a tour of the town and visit the Kremlin, dating from the 16th century.
Next we visit the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, erected in honour of Peter the Great. We stop awhile before the monument to the popular Tatar poet Gabdulla Tukay, the Opera Theatre and the Salikh Saidashev Grand Concert Hall. Cheboksary is the capital of the autonomous Republic of Chuvashia – the name of which appeared for the first time in 1469.
This town of 1.5 million inhabitants is better known by the name of Gorky, and it was a town of exile for many years.
We visit the Ipatievsky Monastery, built between the 16th and 19th centuries, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
We return on board and have lunch as we set sail again. Yaroslavl was an ancient Russian city, founded by Yaroslav the Wise in 1010 and is one of the highlights of the Russian Golden Ring of towns.
Founded in 1221, the historic old town is dominated by a Kremlin, which is spread over both sides of the River Oka. Lunch and dinner are taken on board today and we stay onboard overnight.
We arrive in Kostroma and begin with a visit of the town.Next we visit Mamayev Kurgan, where an imposing memorial has been erected in honour of the defenders of the town and in memory of the ultimate sacrifice made by two million men on both sides of the front.
